Crawling in our bed with your giggling golden head
giving me squeeze hugs and tickle kisses --
What will I do when you grow up too
I just wonder who will bless me as you do?
Holding my hand or having horsy-back rides --
singing favorite songs with silly sorts of rhymes
or making up your own as if you’ve known them all the time
and taking my heart ‘til I wonder if it’s really mine.
Saying prayers for butterflies and ladybugs and crabs,
for Winnie-the-Pooh and pool houses you hope we can have.
Loving your brothers and sister so they’ll someday be glad
to cling to glorious memories of your gleaming joy they’ve had.
What should I hope for you as you grow so soon?
Only that you might see God’s grace great in me
and so seek his heart in your life and your husbands
so you two shall have children who witness the heart of heaven.
